Enhancing user engagement: Empowering 12,000+ Muzz users with the informative new Speed Dating Tab

At Muzz, the virtual Speed Dating events offer members dedicated time for discovering potential partners amid busy schedules, fostering real-time, authentic connections without delays.

This project aimed to boost female participation, crucial for an appealing environment.

Prioritising female sign-ups naturally encourages male involvement, creating a dynamic setting for significant connections.

The insufficient number of female participants led to a notable decrease in Speed dating event ticket sales

Despite the sustained high demand for male tickets since the beginning, the ongoing issue of low female participation led to a notable decline in overall ticket sales. Male users experienced five times longer wait times than females, resulting in their disengagement and a negative experience for all users. This issue stems from the gender imbalance,

Making sure users can comprehend information effortlessly

The synthesis of data collected from both the qualitative survey and usability test has revealed pivotal pain points that are shared among female users.

To enhance user understanding of the events and alleviate concerns, I focused on...

Despite a clear direction, gaining stakeholder approval for the design was challenging

Throughout multiple design review sessions with stakeholders, I created over 200 design iterations. Despite incorporating their feedback into these designs during various meetings, obtaining final approval remained a challenge.

While stakeholders appreciated specific elements within the designs, a consensus on the overall solution remained elusive. There was a recurring sentiment that an essential component was lacking in the overall design.

Back to the problem! Brainstorm ideas from scratch with wireframes

From the brainstorm with my design fellows, I learned a crucial lesson:

Revisiting the problem space is key when encountering design challenges. Continuously asking 'why' throughout the design process—understanding the purpose behind each action.

This approach ensures a clear focus on the problem and the needs of users.

Why do our online Speed dating events matter: Bridging the gap for users

Addressing the challenge of users' lack of understanding of our online Speed Dating events, I crafted an educational section.

This section aimed to enlighten users about the value of our product by illustrating how it addresses common pain points experienced while using marriage/dating apps. The strategy involved first conveying the product's relevance to their needs before delving into the event specifics.

Before and After

New Design

The redesigned virtual Speed Dating feature focuses on enhancing user comprehension and issue resolution.

In this project, I introduced a dedicated Speed Dating event introduction within the event tab. Leveraging familiar visual elements from popular event apps, I included an illustrative video example and an FAQ section on the event detail screen. These additions are intended to streamline user navigation through event specifics and offer a clearer grasp of the Speed Dating feature's functionality.

Impact

The design changes were anticipated to have a positive effect on the conversion rate for the Speed Dating event, especially among female users.

Since its implementation in mid-September 2023, the updated design has positively influenced the experiences of more than 12,000 users across the UK and the US. While quantitative data provides insights into the widespread adoption, future analysis will further illuminate the specific demographic impacts and conversion improvements.

What I learned

Feedback clarification with stakeholders

When stakeholders provide broad design feedback, seize the chance to explore deeper and clarify the problems. Understand that interpretations of terms vary. More precise feedback brings me closer to finalising the design. Looking back, I missed an improvement area: I didn't ask stakeholders enough questions for clearer insights.

When things didn’t work out, change the directions

A notable challenge I encountered in this process was frequently making minor adjustments to designs, neglecting the opportunity to explore broader, more innovative directions. Fortunately, a brainstorming session with my team enabled me to overcome this effectively.

Every iteration is a learning opportunity

While creative names may make premium features more noticeable, they can also lead to user confusion. To avoid this, it's important to use familiar terms to users that facilitate comprehension.

Future steps

Here are potentially future plans for the Speed Dating event design:

View the list of the participants

During our user research, we've identified a requirement to access information about registered members. We would like to explore this possibility in a manner that enhances participation while upholding user privacy.

Incorporate feedback from past event participants

Social proof plays a crucial role in influencing purchase decisions. Incorporating event reviews from attendees can significantly enhance the credibility of our events. We are planning to introduce a review section to the design in the coming times.
